Playing games at home on your computer is becoming increasingly popular these days. The video gaming industry is worth millions globally and many expect that it will overtake other forms of media entertainment, such as watching movies, at some point in the future. Some games are easy enough to play using a joypad so you can get away with these ones sitting on your sofa and looking at your TV screen. However, many of the more in-depth games that are played online today require you to have a lot of technology at your disposal. You might need multiple screens connected to a super-fast computer, for instance. There again, you could be controlling your gameplay with a joystick, a mouse or your keyboard, sometimes with a combination of all three. Equally, you might want to hook up with a headset so that you can communicate to other players in certain virtual gaming environments in real time.
For serious gamers, having all of their gaming equipment at their disposal means investing in a decent desk. However, what is often more important from the point of view of furniture is the sort of chair you will use. Simply put, in modern gaming set up, an armchair won’t do. Nor will a stool, a tub chair or even a bean bag. Although these sorts of chairs have their place, they are no good for gamers who need to switch rapidly between the technologies they utilise to play their games. It boils down to a choice between two types of chair. First is the conventional office chair. The other option is a gaming chair but are these items all they are cracked up to be and do they offer gamers anything more than an office chair would?
The Pros and Cons of Gaming With an Office Chair
If you spend a lot of time gambling at an online casino or playing games in a virtual realm on your computer, then maybe a gaming chair would be beneficial compared to an office chair. However, does that mean that an office chair is no good? Certainly not. Firstly, office chairs are adjustable. This means that you can set them to the correct height so that your body posture is good. Ideally, your legs should extend out in front of you horizontally until they bend at the knee with your feet being able to sit flat on the floor. This way, your lower back should not come under strain even if you spend hours gaming in your chair without a proper break.
Most, but not all, office chairs will have armrests, too. This is good if you spend a lot of time controlling your game with your keyboard and mouse. In particular, finely controlled movements with a mouse can cause a strain on your forearms unless you can rest your wrists and elbows properly. In addition, arms come under strain if your game involves lots of fast-moving keystrokes, especially those which involve using the control and function keys simultaneously with others because you need to stretch further to do so.
Nonetheless, conventional office chairs offer limited support for your back – you have to keep your back straight yourself to get the best out of most of them. There is also little by way of neck support. Lastly, office chairs are frequently uncomfortable after several hours in them due to the upholstery that tends to be used in them
Why Gaming Chairs Are An Improvement Over Office Chairs
Chairs like the Respawn 200 and the Secretlab Omega offer gamers more because they are designed for the sort of body postures gamers have rather than office workers. They are ergonomically designed so that you can sit in them for hours. Most office workers get up and down out of their chair multiple times a day. Gaming chairs are made to be sat in for extended periods, however.
A typical gaming chair will offer lower lumbar support but it should also add comfort higher up your back, around the shoulder blades and the neck. Many have an integrated headrest, just like a racing driver’s seat would, to help in this regard. Fully adjustable armrests are another bonus which means you can keep your hands in the right position no matter how your gaming desk happens to be arranged.
Another key point is the breathable mesh that gaming chairs tend to be made with. This is ideal on a hot day, especially if you don’t have air-conditioning. Some of the more luxurious ones are upholstered in leather which makes them feel more like a throne. Of course, gaming chairs tend to be more expensive than office chairs but – for serious gamers, at least – the difference is worth it.
